Trump's 'skinny' insurance plans will help millions of families

The Trump administration issued a proposed rule allowing the sale of short-term, limited-duration health insurance plans, also known as short-term plans.

The new rule extends the renewal period for short-term plans up to a year, a change from the previous Obama-era policy of letting them last only up to three months. It also allows these plans to be extended for up to 36 months.

The longer renewal period will give Americans more options to determine the length of their healthcare policies, at least until they can find a longer-term plan that better suits their needs.

This is yet another step in the Trump administration’s plan to eleiminate rigid Obamacare rules so that working families have better health insurance choices available.

This should be great news, given that 28 million Americans are currently without health insurance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and that most of those people don’t have health insurance because they can’t afford it.

Trump administration ends Medicaid loophole in drug rebates

Drug companies will be unable to game a requirement to give states large prescription rebates through Medicaid under a law the Trump administration implemented Thursday.

The guidance closes a loophole that drug companies exploited by making superficial changes to existing drugs to inflate their costs and thus pay states less than they owed. The changes allowed drug companies to treat the medicines as new drugs and change the rebate calculation.

The Trump administration is pushing Medicare cost-cutting measures

U.S. health officials will push doctors and hospitals to take on more responsibility for Medicare patients by requiring them to take on financial risk more quickly in the Shared Savings Program, under rules proposed on Thursday.

Seema Verma, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said results from the program have been mixed, and that the new rules are designed to generate more financial savings. While the participants, known as accountable care organizations, or ACOs, have improved the quality of care, they’ve failed to generate savings for the government, Verma said. The new proposal will save an estimated $2.2 billion over the next decade.

“We hope that we’re going to attract providers that are serious about delivering high-quality care and cost-effective care,” Verma said in a briefing ahead of the publication of the proposed rule change.
