As the Chicago Tribune reported, "the city would take on between $90 million and $100 million in debt to pay off legal settlements made last year. The bulk of those settlements were made in connection with police misconduct cases."

Only days ago, the Chicago police were embroiled in a controversy surrounding a released video that seemed to show officers strip-searching suspects right on the streets.

Several years ago, the CPD was rocked by a high profile case that eventually found Police Commander Jon Burge and his "Midnight Crew" of officers guilty of torture aimed at forcing suspects to confess to various crimes, whether they were guilty or not.

Mayor Emanuel has agreed to several multi-million dollar settlements over cases involving the Burge issue. By accepting the settlements, Emanuel helped shield former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley from being forced to testify of what details he knew--and when--about allegations of Burge's brutality.

Last October, Alderman Howard Brookins (21st Ward) introduced an ordinance to create a $20 million fund to compensate victims of police abuse.

In Chicago, more than $20 million in police misconduct settlements paid out in eight weeks of 2018

The city of Chicago paid more than $20 million in settlements for police-involved lawsuits in the first two months of the year, WBBM-TV reported Tuesday, and there could be millions of dollars more paid out in the near future.
What’s the story?

On Monday, the city paid $4.6 million to settle numerous police misconduct cases. On Feb. 9, the city paid $9.3 million in a reversed conviction case.In 2016, Chicago paid $2.2 million for related cases in the first eight weeks of the year. In 2017, that number was $6.1 million; still nowhere near the $20.3 million that came out of the city’s budget in the first eight weeks of 2018.

Of that $20.3 million, about half of that money is for excessive force, false arrest and illegal search and seizure cases.

Also, there are currently 460 civil rights cases against the city that are under review, according to the Chicago Department of Law.

Jon Loevy is a Chicago civil rights attorney who is involved in many of these cases. He said the city is essentially wasting money by settling all these cases and not addressing the issues that cause them.

“From an economic standpoint, dollars and cents, it would be cheaper to solve the problem than to keep paying out on lawsuits,” Loevy told WBBM. “We’ve heard rhetoric lately that it is time to make a change and time will tell if that’s going to happen.

“Our goal is that they put us out of business,” Loevy said.

Last year, the Justice Department published a 164-page report following an investigation into misuse of force by Chicago officers.

Here is what the Justice Department found in Chicago: The Police Department inadequately trains officers to fight crime in a violent city and then fails to properly monitor their use of force or punish wrongdoing. The result is ‘a culture in which officers expect to use force and not be questioned about the need for or propriety of that use.’ Boiled down to the essence, Chicago cops abuse citizens because nobody tells them they can’t.

Besides, what's the big issue, cities issue bonds, the State of Kansas bond debt is over currently over $2 billion due to their adopting austerity measures back in 2010, didn't see Brietfart nor Blaze running out to over their plight

i guess the big issue would be that you'd rather attempt to discredit sources than look at whats being reported...........such is politics today and it's why you'll eventually be a chained slave to the state.

These police brutality suits are BS. The cops did nothing wrong but the city knows the jury will be mostly black and the plaintiff is black and so the city settles.

Blacks cheat the system anyway they can.
 
Makes one wonder if some of these “negro/police” interactions are ways for some negroes to get a payday

Step 4: Play the victim and scream RACISM

Now there's a deflection

I noted your sources, but then went beyond, asking quite simply why they and you are so concerned with Chicago's bonding when you completely ignore such as Kansas who is in a much more threatening position then Chicago? If your going to raise a concern over one than you should really be focused on the other with the greater problem

What does Kansas have to do with police payouts?
 
I personally would like to see the individual officer's involve in these police brutality settlements, pay some of the cost of these settlements, as in out of their salary and personal property! This would end a lot of the police brutality too?!!

It would be a drop in the bucket ... basically bankrupting them ... you may as well put them in Jail
