It sounds more like they were drumming up business. That is, the SPLC knowing funded groups that would go out and do violent, hateful things that the SPLC could then point to on their hate map and hate group listing using those to get more funding from contributors and donors. After all, if these groups went poorly funded and withered out and died off as hate groups, the SPLC would be out of business. They couldn't have that now, could they?
In a word, they were spending money to make more money.

Their defense is they were paying for information... If they were, and they have so little to show for it, they were very wasteful with donor money, and if they were not telling donors they would funnel the money in that direction for this purpose then they did commit fraud.

I actually KNOW that. The DOJ says as much in their official statements about this case. People have been saying it for years about the SPLC. They list someone or some group the Left hates, whether it's true or not, and get donor money. They don't give a shit if they're sued by someone or group for their wrongly listing them. They see it as they got $10 for every dollar they paid out in some libel suit. It's all about the Benjaman's baby!

Didn't say that. I said the SPLC is and has been using such groups to profit from massively. Now they've been caught using donor money intended to fight such groups to finance those groups to keep the donations rolling in. That is, they are scamming their donors to enrich themselves.
