If the electoral college victor is not reinforced by a popular vote win also then such split elections will always be deemed illegitimate by most of the people.
Practically a truism, and it's not healthy for anyone. Not even the victor whose asterisk win will diminish his power in office.

Wrong. The popular vote margin in CA provided the difference (and then some) to the nationwide difference. Why should the popular vote in CA determine the results of the entire nation? Each STATE has a popular vote. Each STATE decides how to align that popular vote with their electoral votes. All but 2 have winner take all popular votes. Yet you cry about this.
