And, yes, fusion will radically alter civilization. Once a practical fusion generator is built, we will have more energy than we will know what to do with. Fossil fuels, solar, wind, and everything else will become obsolete. When energy costs become practically nothing, it will have a snowball effect on everything else.
I have heard that for over 60 years. Good thing solar and wind are here.

Realism:
The United States only controls about 2.1% of the world's global oil reserves, while OPEC controls 80% of them. So if the US quadrupled its energy production, OPEC would simply either cut their production by the same amount to maintain the current price, or they will radically increase production to drive down the price per barrel to the point that it's unprofitable for US oil companies to extract and sell it. We know this because we lived through it 7 years ago, when the price per barrel of oil dropped because of OPEC production increases, and dozens of oil companies in Texas, North Dakota, and Oklahoma all went belly-up. And because those states are heavily dependent on petro dollars, all needed a federal bailout...which they got in 2016.

Ambitious project to import five million tonnes of H2 a year as synthetic green CH4 — and convert it back to hydrogen — is accelerated in response to Ukraine crisis
A Belgian company that plans to import millions of tonnes of renewable hydrogen into Germany in the form of green methane says it will accelerate its plans in the wake of the Ukraine crisis.
Tree Energy Solutions (TES) now aims to complete a new “green gas” terminal at the port of Wilhelmshaven, northwest Germany, to accept deliveries of its “carbon-neutral” liquified e-methane before the winter of 2025, having previously targeted a 2027 start.
This CH4 — which would be produced by combining captured CO2 with low-cost renewable hydrogen using the well-established Sabatier methanisation process — would then be converted back to H2 or, in some cases, used as methane with carbon capture.
In the short to medium term, this “green energy hub” would also import liquified natural gas (LNG) in order to reduce Germany’s reliance on natural gas piped from Russia.
“The fast-tracking will provide for alternative energy security for Germany and Europe whilst accelerating the growth of green gas imports over time,” the company said.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Sunday that Germany planned to build two new LNG terminals, including one at Wilhelmshaven, but that is reportedly a mothballed project developed by utility Uniper.
