'A price needs to be paid': US Senate bill targets Saudi Arabia

Bipartisan move follows decision to place sanctions on 17 Saudi nationals involved in killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi.

A bipartisan group of US senators introduced legislation on Thursday seeking to punish Saudi Arabia over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and for the kingdom's role in the devastating war in Yemen.

The move comes hours after the US slapped economic sanctions on 17 Saudis allegedly involved in the murder of Khashoggi inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul.

If the bill were to become law, it would suspend weapon sales to Saudi Arabia and prohibit US refuelling of Saudi coalition aircraft conducting air raids in Yemen.

It also would impose sanctions on anyone blocking humanitarian access in Yemen and anyone supporting the Houthi rebels.

The Senate proposal comes a day after House Republicans moved to block a bill aimed at ending US support for the Saudi involvement in Yemen.

What do you know about Khashoggi? Whatever happened to the other one? He had all the morals of Carlos the Jackal.

There's more to this story.. Evidently the Turks knew what was going on and Khashoggi had been warned by the British... and now Erdogan wants Gulen extradited to Turkey.

I think it had something to do with him getting married. How many Embassies torture and kill their own citizens? You know, like in the 21st century.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey last month, the CIA has concluded, according to anonymous sources who spoke with the Washington Post and Reuters.
The US foreign espionage agency assessed with “high confidence” that the prince was behind the death of the Post columnist, the newspaper reported on Friday evening, citing “people familiar with the matter.” Reuters later cited its own source as saying that the spy agency “had briefed other parts of the US government on its assessment,” which contradicts the official position maintained by both Riyadh and Washington thus far.

You might ask why this issue has seized the public attention. The obvious reason is that journalists worldwide have kept it at the forefront of their media outlets. Khashoggi was one of their own, after all, no matter the flavor of his politics. He also worked for an American newspaper- and Americans themselves are a tad miffed that some foreign despot should treat that fact with contempt.

So bin Salman- and I have no qualms about adding my own opinion to his guilt- miscalculated . His lifetime of regal arrogance has betrayed him. Without his domestic armature of superiority he is vulnerable- and he is relying on the weaknesses of his wealthy foreign collaborators to maintain that illusion. That's what it is, of course- an illusion. Bin Salman isn't ' great ' at all- and neither are those that ply his regime with weaponry.

The case has sickened the public because it cracks the veneer of civilization which keeps nations from tearing out each others throats. Consulates and embassies are supposed to be, like churches once were, sanctuaries . Nobody would expect to have their throat cut by the priest in the confessional. The murder and dismemberment has SHOCKED- and that's the only comfort we can take from this. People have refused to accept it as ' normal '. It is not ' normal ' outside of the havens for degenerates like the Sauds. It is most definitively abnormal- and everybody should regard with the deepest of suspicions anybody else that supports it it any way.

He could have gotten his papers for the wedding at the embassy in NY or DC.
